How to use the crypto profit calculator
- Enter the Amount invested ($), the total you paid in dollars. The buy fee is taken out of it.
- Enter the Buy price per coin ($) and the Sell price per coin ($). Tiny prices like 0.00001234 work.
- Enter the Buy fee (%) and Sell fee (%) your exchange charges. Leave a fee blank for 0%.
- Read Coins bought, Net profit (or loss), ROI and the Break-even sell price per coin.
How crypto profit is calculated
Fees hit you twice, once on the way in and once on the way out, so the tool applies both:
Coins = Invested × (1 − buy fee) ÷ buy price
Proceeds = Coins × sell price × (1 − sell fee)
Profit = Proceeds − Invested and ROI = Profit ÷ Invested
Break-even price = buy price ÷ ((1 − buy fee) × (1 − sell fee))
Worked example with the default numbers
You invest $1,000.00 at $30,000 a coin with a 0.5% buy fee. The fee is $5.00, so $995.00 buys 0.03316667 coins. You sell at $60,000, which is $1,990.00 before a 0.5% sell fee of $9.95, leaving $1,980.05. Profit is $980.05, an ROI of 98.01%, after $14.95 in fees. The price only had to reach $30,302.27 to break even.
Limits and edge cases
- The tool handles one buy and one sell. If you bought in several purchases, divide the total dollars spent by the total coins bought, enter that average as the buy price and set the buy fee to 0 if the average already includes fees.
- Fee rates vary by exchange, volume tier and order type. Kraken's first tier, for example, lists 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker, and a simple buy button usually adds a spread on top. Check your exchange's current fee page.
- Network and withdrawal fees, slippage and staking rewards are not included, and every result is in dollars before tax.
- For the tax on a sale, use the capital gains calculator. To compare with shares, try the stock profit calculator, and for any investment the ROI calculator.
Crypto profit questions people ask
How do I calculate crypto profit?
Coins bought equal the amount invested minus the buy fee, divided by the buy price. Profit equals coins times the sell price, minus the sell fee, minus what you invested. $1,000 of a coin bought at $30,000 with a 0.5% fee and sold at $60,000 is a $980.05 profit.
Do I pay tax on crypto profit?
In the US, yes. The IRS treats crypto as property, so selling it, swapping it or spending it is a taxable event. Coins held more than one year get long-term capital gains rates, and one year or less is taxed as ordinary income. Brokers report gross proceeds on Form 1099-DA from 2025 sales and cost basis from 2026.
How do I calculate profit if I bought in several purchases?
Add up the dollars you spent and divide by the total coins you got to find your average buy price. Enter that as the buy price, and set the buy fee to 0 if the average already includes fees. This matches dollar-cost averaging into one position.
What is the break-even price on a crypto trade?
It is the sell price where profit is exactly $0 after both fees. On the default trade it is $30,302.27, about 1% above the $30,000 buy price, because you pay 0.5% going in and 0.5% coming out.
Can I deduct a crypto loss on my taxes?
Capital losses first offset capital gains. If losses are larger, you can deduct up to $3,000 of the excess against other income each year ($1,500 if married filing separately) and carry the rest forward.
