How to use the grocery list generator
- Type or paste your items into Your list, one item per line. Quantities are fine, like
2 lb chicken breast. - Leave Merge duplicates ticked to combine repeats, or tick Split lines at commas if you pasted
milk, eggs, breadon one line. - To pick a section yourself, start a line with it and a colon, like
Pantry: tahini. A line that ends with a colon, likeCostco:, starts a section for the lines below it. - Shop from Your list by aisle, ticking items as you go. Copy list and Print list give you a copy to take along.
How items are sorted and merged
Each item is checked against a built-in word list of several hundred foods and household goods. Whole words match, with plurals, and the longest match wins, with extra weight on the last word. So peanut butter goes to Pantry, not Dairy, ice cream to Frozen, ground cinnamon to Pantry and hamburger buns to Bakery. The words frozen, canned and dried decide on their own, so frozen broccoli lands in Frozen. Anything unknown goes to Other.
Sections run in a shopping route: Produce, Bakery, Pantry, Beverages, Household, then Meat and Poultry, Seafood, Dairy and Eggs, and Frozen. That puts cold food last, which food safety guidance recommends. Stores are laid out differently, so use a section line to override.
Two lines merge when the name matches (ignoring capitals and a plural s) and the unit matches. 2 eggs plus eggs becomes 3 eggs, and 1 lb plus 2 lb ground beef becomes 3 lb. Repeats with no quantity read milk (x2). Different units, such as 1 lb and 8 oz, stay separate.
Worked example
The default list has 12 lines. The tool shows 12 items in 5 sections:
- Produce (4): bananas, spinach, apples, broccoli
- Bakery (1): sourdough bread
- Meat and Poultry (2): 2 lb chicken breast, ground beef
- Seafood (1): salmon
- Dairy and Eggs (4): milk, eggs, yogurt, butter
Copy list writes each section name with a colon and its items under it, and pasting that text back in rebuilds the same list.
Limits and edge cases
- Sorting is by keyword, not a store map. Brand names and unusual items can land in Other. Fix one by starting its line with a section and a colon.
- Limits: 500 items, 120 characters each.
- Your list is saved in this browser and never uploaded. Ticks are not saved, so they clear on reload.
- No unit conversion. Use the cooking measurement converter to compare cups, ounces and grams. To buy for a bigger meal, resize the recipe first with the recipe scaler, and plan the week's dinners in the meal planner.
Grocery list FAQ
How do I organize a grocery list by aisle?
Group items by store section, such as produce, bakery, pantry, dairy and frozen, so you walk each part of the store once. Paste your list into the tool and it sorts the items for you.
What order should I shop in?
Start with produce, bakery and shelf-stable goods and finish with meat, dairy and frozen food. Cold food then spends the least time warm. USDA says to refrigerate perishables within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90 °F.
Why did my item land in Other?
The tool did not recognize the word. Start the line with a section name and a colon, such as Pantry: harissa, and it goes where you chose.
Does it combine duplicate items?
Yes, when the name and unit match. 2 eggs and eggs become 3 eggs, and 1 lb and 2 lb of ground beef become 3 lb. Clear Merge duplicates to keep every line.
Can I tick items off on my phone?
Yes. Tap an item to cross it off. Ticks are not saved after a reload, so print the list if you want a paper copy.
