How to use the hourly to salary calculator
- Choose Hourly to salary or Salary to hourly. Switching carries your number across, so $25 an hour becomes a $52,000 salary.
- Type your Hourly wage or Annual salary.
- Pick your Hours per week, or choose Custom for any schedule from 1 to 168 hours, such as 32 or 45.
- Set Paid weeks per year. Leave 52 if your time off is paid; enter 50 if you take two unpaid weeks.
- Read your gross pay for every period in the table: hourly, daily, weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly and yearly.
The formula
Annual pay = hourly wage ร hours per week ร paid weeks
Salary to hourly runs the same formula backward: annual salary รท (hours per week ร paid weeks). A full-time year of 40 hours for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. Weekly pay is the wage times weekly hours, biweekly is two weeks of that, semimonthly is the yearly total divided by 24, monthly divides it by 12 and daily assumes a five-day week. Some employers use a different divisor: the federal government, for example, divides annual pay by 2,087 hours, so its hourly rates come out slightly lower.
Worked example
The calculator opens at $25 an hour, 40 hours a week and 52 paid weeks. That is 2,080 hours, so the yearly pay is $52,000.00. Monthly pay is $4,333.33, semimonthly $2,166.67, biweekly $2,000.00, weekly $1,000.00 and daily $200.00. Going the other way, a $60,000 salary at the same schedule works out to $28.85 an hour.

Limits and edge cases
- Results are gross pay. For take-home pay after federal, state and payroll taxes, use the paycheck calculator.
- Overtime is not added. If you regularly work past 40 hours, enter only your regular hours and add overtime separately.
- Salaried exempt employees earn the same pay however long they work, so more hours lower the effective hourly rate.
- Freelancers pricing their time should use the freelance hourly rate calculator, which adds overhead and unbilled hours, or the freelance income calculator for take-home after self-employment tax.
Hourly and salary FAQ
How much is $20 an hour a year?
$20 an hour is $41,600 a year before taxes at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. With two unpaid weeks off (50 weeks) it is $40,000, and at 30 hours a week for 52 weeks it is $31,200.
How do I convert my salary to an hourly rate?
Divide your annual salary by the hours you work in a year. A $60,000 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is $60,000 รท 2,080 = $28.85 an hour. If you usually work 45 hours, divide by 2,340 instead and the rate drops to $25.64.
How is overtime calculated?
Under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees must get at least one and a half times their regular rate for hours over 40 in a workweek. At $25 an hour, each overtime hour pays at least $37.50. Some states add daily overtime rules.
What is the difference between biweekly and semimonthly pay?
Biweekly pay comes every two weeks, which is 26 paychecks a year, so two months each year have three paydays. Semimonthly pay comes twice a month, 24 paychecks a year, so each check is a little larger: $2,166.67 instead of $2,000.00 on a $52,000 salary.
