How to make a meme with this generator
- Drop an image on the box, press Enter on it to browse, or paste one with Ctrl+V. A sample photo is already loaded.
- Type the Top text and Bottom text. All caps is on because memes use capitals; untick it for mixed case. Press Enter inside a box for a line break.
- Choose a Font, then set Font size, Outline width, Text color and Outline color. Move a caption with Top text position or Bottom text position, or drag it on the preview with a mouse.
- Pick PNG or JPG under Download as, then click Download meme or Copy image.
How the text is drawn
Each caption is outlined first and filled on top, so the outline never eats into the letters. Sizes are relative to a 600 px wide image: Font size 48 means letters 8% of the image width, so a 1,200 px photo gets 96 px letters and a 12 px outline. Lines wrap at 94% of the image width. If a caption is too wide, or would cover more than 45% of the image height, the font shrinks until it fits, and the line above the preview says so.
Impact is the classic meme font. Android and Linux do not include it, so there the page loads Anton, a similar typeface under the SIL Open Font License, and tells you.
Worked example
With the defaults and the 1,200 x 800 sample photo, Font size 48 draws 96 px letters (48 x 1,200 / 600) with a 12 px outline (6 x 1,200 / 600). Each caption sits 3% from its edge, which is 24 px of the 800 px height. The page shows Output 1,200 x 800 px PNG, the same size as the photo, and the file downloads as meme.png. Your own image downloads as its name plus -meme.
Limits and edge cases
- There are two captions, top and bottom. For multi-panel formats, build the panels in an editor first.
- The meme keeps the pixel size of your image. Anything over 16,777,216 pixels is scaled down, and animated GIFs become a still from their first frame.
- A word wider than the image is shrunk first and split across lines only as a last resort. Crop or resize first with the image cropper or image resizer if you need a platform size. For a small credit or logo instead of a caption, use the image watermark tool.
Meme text generator FAQ
What font do memes use?
The classic image macro uses Impact in white capitals with a thick black outline. Pick Impact in the Font list; if your device lacks it, Anton is loaded as a close match.
Can I move the text or add more lines?
Yes. Use the position sliders, or drag a caption on the preview with a mouse. Each caption can have several lines: press Enter to break a line, or let long text wrap. Touch screens use the sliders.
Why is my text smaller than the size I chose?
Font size is a maximum. When a caption is wider than the image or taller than 45% of it, the generator shrinks it to fit and notes that above the preview. Shorten the text or break it into lines to keep it larger.
What size will my meme be?
The same pixel size as the image you load, up to 16,777,216 pixels. The line above the preview shows the exact output size, and JPG gives a smaller file than PNG.
Can I make a meme from any picture?
Technically yes, but film stills and photos belong to someone else. Sharing a meme is often treated as fair use, which depends on the facts, so use your own or licensed images for ads and anything commercial.
