How to make a letterhead

  1. Enter your Company name and, if you want one, a Tagline.
  2. Choose a Logo (PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF or SVG up to 3 MB) and drag the Logo height slider until it looks right.
  3. Fill in Address, Phone, Email and Website. They print in the footer.
  4. Pick a Header layout (Left or Centered), an Accent color and a Paper size (US Letter or A4).
  5. Replace the Letter text, check the preview, then select Print / Save as PDF and choose Save as PDF in the print window.

How the page is built

The page is drawn at true paper size: 8.5 x 11 inches for US Letter or 210 x 297 mm for A4. Margins are 0.6 inch at the top and 0.75 inch at the sides, the letter text fills the middle, and the footer sits at the bottom of the page. Your accent color draws the rule under the header and the line above the footer. The company name is darkened automatically if your accent is too pale to read on white (a 4.5 to 1 contrast ratio, the WCAG minimum).

The print window uses the CSS @page size rule with no page margin, so the browser's own header and footer text is left off the sheet.

Worked example

With the defaults, the page shows Acme Corporation with the tagline "Innovation. Quality. Service." under a blue rule, a short reply letter, and a footer with the three-line address on the left and (212) 555-0100, info@acme.com and www.acme.com on the right. The note above the preview reads "One US Letter page. The preview is scaled to fit your screen." Choose A4 and the page becomes 210 x 297 mm. Paste in a long letter and the note changes to "This letter runs to about 2 pages on US Letter", because the header prints only on page 1. For a cover page to go with a bill, pair it with the Invoice Generator.

Limits and edge cases

Frequently asked questions

What should a company letterhead include?

Your company name, logo, address, phone number, email and website. A UK limited company must also show its registered number, its registered office address, where it is registered (England and Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland) and that it is a limited company.

What size is a letterhead?

In the US and Canada it is Letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches. Most other countries use A4, 210 x 297 mm. Pick the one you print on under Paper size.

How do I make a reusable letterhead template?

Clear the Letter text box, select Print / Save as PDF and save the file. You get a blank letterhead you can print on plain paper or send to a print shop. Your company details are also remembered in this browser for next time.

What logo file works best?

A PNG with a transparent background at least 300 pixels tall, or an SVG, prints sharpest. JPG works too but shows a white box on a colored background.

Why does my printout look cut off or have extra margins?

Set the print scale to 100 percent and make the printer paper size match the Paper size you chose. Many printers cannot print to the very edge of the sheet, so keep important text inside the margins.
