How to record a voice memo
- Choose Auto-stop if you want a limit: 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes, or No limit. The default is 5 minutes.
- Tap the round Start recording button and allow the microphone when your browser asks. The green meter moves while it hears you.
- Tap the button again to stop. The memo appears under Voice memos with a waveform and a player.
- Type a name in the label box on the memo, then press Download. Download all (.zip) saves every memo in one file, and Delete or Delete all removes them.
How memos are stored and named
- Saved on this device: memos are kept in your browser's IndexedDB storage, so they survive a refresh or a restart. Nothing is uploaded. Browsers can clear this storage (private windows, cleared site data, low disk space, or Safari after about a week without a visit), so download anything important.
- Format: the file is whatever your browser records, usually WebM or Ogg with Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox and M4A in Safari. Chrome's recordings run at about 1 MB per minute.
- File names: the label becomes the file name, so a memo labelled Standup notes downloads as Standup notes.webm. Duplicate labels get (2), (3) and so on inside the ZIP.
Worked example
Leave Auto-stop on its default of 5 min and press record. After 30 seconds the timer reads 00:30 and the line under the button reads Stops automatically in 04:30. At 05:00 the memo stops itself, is saved as Voice memo 1 with a duration of 05:00, and the status line reads Stopped automatically at 05:00.
Limits and edge cases
Phones may stop recording when the screen locks or you switch apps, so keep the page open while you talk. Long memos use memory while recording, and a private window keeps memos only until it closes. If storage is blocked, the page says so and memos last for the open tab only. This tool records and plays audio but does not edit or transcribe it. For WAV or MP3 downloads and a microphone chooser, use the Audio Recorder, to check your microphone first try the Mic Test, and to convert a memo to another format use the Audio Format Converter.
Frequently asked questions
Will my voice memos still be here tomorrow?
Yes, in the same browser on the same device, because memos are saved in your browser's storage. They are not backed up or synced, and your browser can clear them if you wipe site data, use a private window or run short of space, so download anything important.
How do I save all my voice memos at once?
Press Download all (.zip) above the list. You get one ZIP with every memo named after its label, which avoids the prompts browsers show when a page downloads many files separately.
Why is my memo a .webm or .m4a file and not an MP3?
The recorder saves the format your browser produces: WebM or Ogg with Opus in Chrome, Edge and Firefox, and M4A in Safari. Most modern players open these files, and the Audio Recorder tool on this site can export WAV or MP3.
What does Auto-stop do?
It ends the recording by itself after 1, 5, 10 or 30 minutes, so a forgotten recording does not fill your device. The default is 5 minutes, and the line under the button counts down the time left. Choose No limit for a longer memo.
