How to use the online whiteboard
- Choose Pen or Eraser. The pen is selected when the page opens.
- Pick one of the eight color swatches, or use the round box at the end of the row for any other color. Choosing a color switches you back to the pen.
- Drag the Pen size slider from 1 to 60 px. The pen starts at 3 px (5 px on a phone) and the eraser keeps its own size, 24 px to start (40 px on a phone), so switching tools does not change your pen width.
- Press and drag on the board with a mouse, finger or stylus. A single tap leaves a dot.
- Undo and Redo step through your strokes (Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y also work). Clear wipes the board, and Undo brings it back.
- Save PNG downloads the board as whiteboard.png.
How it works
The board is an HTML canvas. Each stroke is stored as a list of points on a fixed grid, 1600 by 1000 pixels on a wide screen and 1000 by 1250 on a phone, and is drawn as short straight segments with rounded ends. Because strokes keep their own coordinates, resizing the window scales the picture without moving your lines. The eraser paints white, and the saved PNG has a solid white background. Mouse, touch and pen input all arrive as pointer events. After every stroke the board is autosaved in your browser's local storage, and autosave pauses with a warning if the drawing grows past about 3 MB.
Worked example
On a wide screen the box above the board first reads Blank board, 1600 by 1000 pixels, with the black pen at 3 px. Drag one line and it reads 1 stroke on the board, 1600 by 1000 pixels. Draw a second line, switch to Red and draw a third, and it reads 3 strokes on the board. Press Undo and it drops to 2 strokes on the board with the note Undid the last stroke. Press Save PNG and the note becomes Saved whiteboard.png (1600 by 1000 pixels, white background).
Limits and edge cases
- Drawing needs a pointer, so there is no keyboard way to draw. Every button and slider can be used with the keyboard.
- This is a simple freehand board. It has no text, shapes, layers, zoom or live sharing, and the PNG is a fixed-size picture.
- A board saved on a wide screen keeps its shape on a phone, so it looks smaller there.
- Need an exact color code? Use the color picker. To shrink the saved PNG use the image compressor, or turn it into a document with image to PDF.
Frequently asked questions
How do I save a whiteboard drawing as an image?
Press Save PNG. The board downloads as whiteboard.png with a white background, at 1600 by 1000 pixels on a wide screen or 1000 by 1250 pixels on a phone. The button is off until you have drawn something.
Can I draw with my finger or a stylus?
Yes. Mouse, touch and pen all work the same way. The page does not scroll while you drag on the board, so on a phone scroll by dragging on the page outside the board.
Is my drawing uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything is drawn and stored in your browser, and nothing is sent to a server or shared. The board is autosaved in this browser's local storage so a refresh does not lose it.
Can several people draw on the same board?
No. This board is for one person on one device. To share your sketch, save it as a PNG and send the file, or use a shared whiteboard app if you need live collaboration.
Will my board still be here after I refresh the page?
Yes, in the same browser. It is lost if you press Clear and leave the page, clear your site data, or use a private window that discards storage. Save PNG to keep a permanent copy.
